Setting Up Genesis eNews Extended
Here is a how to video and instructions for adding your MailChimp newsletter subscribe list using Genesis eNews Extended.
In order to begin building a list of subscribers for your newsletter list, we first have to begin collecting emails. There are many list building companies out there, but I recommend MailChimp and Convert Kit depending on the level you’re at or what you’re wanting to offer through your list. If you’re just starting your site and you just need the basics to get started, MailChimp is the way to go! MailChimp is incredibly user friendly and is free up to 2000 subscribers which is really wonderful when just starting out.
Many of you may already have a list, and are looking to use it on your WordPress website inside a Widget. If you are using a Genesis based theme than I recommend the Genesis eNews Extended plugin. This post will show you how to set it up. Also you can find out where your subscribing list link is located. You’ll need this link for the Form action field when setting up your widget.
Let’s get started!
SIGN UP FOR A FREE MAILCHIMP ACCOUNT
The first thing you need is to actually have a Mailchimp account established. It’s completely free to sign up, so go here and create your account. Once you’ve entered your details and hit Get Started, you will get an email at the email address you provided and you’ll need to activate your account through that email.
Once you activate your account it will take you through a series of questions to complete your account creation.
CREATE A LIST
Now that your account is all created, you’ll need to create a list for your newsletter. Login to your new account and navigate to the List tab. Once there, you’ll hit the button to Create List. Enter your information on the next screen for your newsletter list.
On this screen you will see your address listed and the short answer to your question of “Do I have to include my address in my newsletters?” is Yes. Here is an article from Amy Andrews on why you need it and how to not use your home address.
GET YOUR FORM EMBED CODE
At this point you have your new account created and have a list created which is needed for this step. Now that we have your list created you’ll need to go the List tab, and click on the name of your list. Once there you’ll see a tab up top that says Signup Forms. Click that, and then select the Embedded forms option. Once there, copy and paste the code. You can deselect the Form options, and go with a naked form, since you will only be needing the url/link found within the embedded code.
Copy this code, and paste it into a plain text editor (like Notepad). Now look through this file for the section of code that looks like this:

SYNC YOUR LIST WITH THE GENESIS ENEWS EXTENDED PLUGIN
I’m assuming you’ve already downloaded the Genesis eNews Extended Plugin. Once this plugin is installed and activated, you will now have an extra widget in your Appearance > Customize > Widgets panel. Add this widget into whichever space you are needing to place your newsletter sign up form. You can also do this using your Appearance > Widgets panel.
In the Form Action field you’ll enter the link from the last step that is in bold, and underlined above.
Make sure that the link is preceded with https: and that there are no quotations at the beginning or end of the link.
Next, make sure that your Email, First Name, and Last Name fields match the screenshot below.
You can change the text withing your form. For example, into another language. You do this by editing the text in the area below the Form Action field, as in the screenshots below. Showing first the form in English, followed by the set-up for a Dutch version.
If you are working from the Appearance > Widgets panel, save your widget.
If you are working from the Appearance > Customize > Widgets panel, click on publish.
